Delhi: Man posing as Uber driver locks woman inside cab, harasses her

The driver, who had not even driving license, was driving someone else's auto who was registered with the aggregator Uber.

The alleged incident took place on the evening of March 9, when the woman, who works with a multinational company, booked an Uber to head home.

During the ride, the driver was taking a different route than the one woman take usually when the woman tried to get out from the vehicle while the auto was stopped at a traffic signal, the driver locked the car's door by using central locking system and threatened her.

The accused has been identified as Sanjeev alias Sanju. When she tried to get out from the vehicle at a traffic signal, the driver centrally locked the doors and threatened her, the police said.

The girl grew suspicion as the face of driver was also not matching with the one provided by the app.

She panicked when she realised that the driver allegedly chose an isolated route over her preferred route. The woman managed to escape from the auto when the vehicle slowed down at a CNG station near GTK depot. "The woman quickly dialled the police control room number even as the driver escaped with the auto", said the officer.

On the midnight of 9th and 10th March, The police traced the driver in Janti Kalan Village with the help of information provided by the Uber and it came to light that the auto which was registered with the Uber does not belong to the accused. He used to drive the vehicle even though he was not registered as the driver of the vehicle and did not have a driving licence. The Uber's driver absconded from the spot with the vehicle, police added. A reply is awaited, they said.

According to the further details, a man who registered his vehicle with Uber had given his auto to Sanju to drive. The drivers in the present incident have violated the terms of the agreement that Uber signs with its driver-partners...

Meanwhile, responding to the allegations, the Uber spokesperson said that it is the case of "identity theft" and that the company has immediately removed the driver. "We stand ready to support the law enforcement authorities with any information needed for their investigation", stated an Uber spokesperson.
