Confirmed: Claire Foy Was Paid Less Than Matt Smith on 'The Crown'

On Tuesday, producers revealed that Claire Foy was paid less for her role as Queen Elizabeth on The Crown than Matt Smith was paid for playing Prince Phillip, despite having more screen time.

"The producers acknowledged that [Smith] did make more due to his Doctor Who fame, but that they would rectify that for the future", Variety reported.

Even Queen Elizabeth herself, the human embodiment of poise and restraint, would likely find herself angry to discover that the actress who plays her on Netflix's The Crown earned less than her male counterpart during the first two seasons of the critically-acclaimed period drama. (When Smith first started on "Doctor Who" nearly 10 years ago, he signed a three-year, £600,000 contract - just over $1 million in Canadian dollars.) "The Crown", one of the most expensive TV shows in history, had an approximate budget of US$7 million an episode.

The Crown's salary news is just the latest instance of Hollywood's egregious wage gap.

I hope that whoever is replacing Smith (rumor has it that it's Hugh Laurie) will be making less money than Olivia Colman, as promised, because as Mackie said, "no one gets paid more than the Queen".

He said the recent abduction of 110 girls from Dapchi, Yobe State, though condemnable, a deal could be brokered to set them free. I think this is the best way to help the Nigerian government to get these girls released, which we hope will be done peacefully.

Foy, 33, won a Golden Globe and two Screen Actors Guild awards for her nuanced portrayal of Britain's monarch in the 1950s and 1960s. The success carried on into the second season, with Foy bringing home another SAG Award and earning another Golden Globe nomination. She received nominations at the BAFTA and Primetime Emmy Awards.

While it's positive that the pay scale will be rebalanced from here on out, at this point it won't do Foy any good.

'Going forward, no one gets paid more than the Queen, ' said Mackie.

While Smith's salary wasn't stated outright, Foy was paid $40,000 per episode, according to a breakdown of TV stars' pay. It is not yet known how much Smith was paid. Prince Philip will also be played by a different actor.
