World Rugby issue statement over TMO decision at Twickenham

Wales have been told by World Rugby's referees supremo that the television match official made a mistake with his controversial decision to disallow them a try in their Six Nations defeat by England last weekend.

"World Rugby has clarified to the Wales team management as part of the usual review process with teams that the TMO made an error in the application of law during the England versus Wales match at Twickenham", said a World Rugby spokesperson.

"In accordance with law 21.1b Wales should have been awarded a try as the Wales player grounded the ball".

At the 2015 World Cup, they dumped referee Craig Joubert in it when they said he had made an error in Scotland's 35-34 quarter-final loss to Australia.

On Tuesday, World Rugby agreed with Gatland. Alain Rolland [match officials manager] confirmed the TMO had made a mistake.

The Wales attack coach, Rob -Howley, expressed his gratitude that World Rugby had done so after Gatland had said he would be seeking clarification from the governing body for Newman's "terrible mistake".

"It's happened. It's disappointing that it happens in professional sport but we focus on the next two weeks and getting ourselves ready for Ireland."

England sit second in the Six Nations with two wins from their opening two games.

Jones says he doesn't think it helps "support the integrity of the referee" and once the game is done we should just "get on with it".

On the flip side, England head coach Eddie Jones was asked about World Rugby's decision to undermine their TMO and admit the try should have been given. "One side's won, one side's lost". Sometimes you get the rub of the green, sometimes you don't.

Anthony Watson and Owen Farrell are expected to recover from the unspecified knocks they sustained against Wales, but Elliot Daly has now suffered damage to his calf having completed his rehabilitation to an ankle complaint. We invited him to the camp and he came.

The French Federation said the players had acted inappropriately and the investigation led to their plane home being delayed on Monday. There's different ways of exerting pressure in scrums and some of it is old fashioned and some of it is new fashioned and they just do different things.
