Why Women In Iran Are Ripping Off Their Hijabs?

Since the video of her protest went viral, Iranian women have been sharing pictures of themselves waving their headscarves from sticks in a public act of defiance.

Videos and photos shared on social media have shown demonstrators standing on utility boxes on street sidewalks, defiantly waving their hijabs.Tehran police suggested that their actions were incited by foreigners, saying those arrested were "deceived" into removing their hijabs, Iran's semiofficial Tasnim News Agency reported.

Even men and some veiled women joined the campaign.

She had tied it to a stick in an apparent reference to the white Wednesday protests against Iran's strict interpretation of Islamic law on female modesty.

By putting their scarfs on a stick, they are protesting against arrest, suppression, and their violated rights, Alinejad said in an interview with Radio Farda.

The campaign against compulsory hijab was originally started by Masih Alinejad.

Police in Tehran arrested 29 women for being outdoors without their hijab or headscarf.

Amnesty International had called on Iranian authorities to "immediately and unconditionally" release the woman after her arrest.

The prosecutor general, Mohammad Jafar Montazeri, reportedly dismissed the protests as "childish" and instigated "from outside the country".

However, Soheila Jelodarzadeh, a member of the Iranian parliament has expressed empathy with the protesters and has said that it was the result of pressure on women and "erroneous behavior" of the regime toward them.

Hijab has a complicated history in Iran.

Women's dress has been heavily scrutinized in the Islamic republic since the 1979 revolution, when adherence to an Islamic dress code became compulsory.

The footage shows Mohaved waving her white hijab defiantly from the end of a pole, her black hair flowing uncovered. In recent months, enforcement of the law banning the hijab has been relaxed.

Activists who defy the dress code could face jail sentences of several weeks for removing their head scarves.
