US urges UN to hold Myanmar military accountable for 'ethnic cleansing'

US urges UN to hold Myanmar military accountable for 'ethnic cleansing'

"We strongly call for their immediate and unconditional release", she said.

US Permanent Representative Nikki Haley, who insisted on referring to Myanmar as Burma, said, "The Security Council has so far failed in its responsibility to act in response to the clear threat to global peace and security that has resulted from recent events in northern Rakhine State".

Haley and several other United Nations ambassadors referred specifically to the arrest of two journalists from worldwide news agency Reuters. Such presence and access remains essential to monitor protection conditions, provide independent information to refugees, and accompany returns as and when they take place.

Almost 690,000 Rohingya have fled Rakhine and crossed into southern Bangladesh since August, when attacks on security posts by rebels triggered a military crackdown that the United Nations has said may amount to genocide.

The priorities laid out by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, which include the end of violence, humanitarian access, and return of refugees from Bangladesh, have not been entirely implemented five months after the start of violence in Rakhine, said Assistant Secretary-General for Political Affairs Miroslav Jenca.

The UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, however, told the Council that the situation in Myanmar was not yet conducive for the return of refugees.

The current crisis that sent about 700,000 refugees - a lot of them Rohingya Muslims - across the border to Bangladesh followed attacks on Myanmar security posts in August 2017 by the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (ARSA), which is led by Karachi-born Ata Ullah leading to counterattacks by the armed forces and vigilantes. "This action of the Tatmadaw is positive step forward in taking responsibility and deserves encouragement", he said.

United Flight Lands Safely After Engine Failure
Sudiacal was traveling with her 4-month-old-son on the flight. "They looked them straight in the eye and that was real". Maria Falaschi , a marketing consultant on board, also shared photos - calling it the "scariest flight of my life".

"For the Myanmar government, their ambassador said that the country respects the freedom of the press".

He said humanitarian action and funding must be sustained, but longer term support will also be required to help the government reinforce the local infrastructure and economy, and ensure access to opportunities for refugees and the communities hosting them.

"Every citizen is bound by the existing law of the land".

File photo taken on September 7, 2017 shows a house burning in Gawdu Tharya village near Maungdaw in Rakhine state in northern Myanmar.

During the council meeting, many countries including Britain, Netherlands, France, Kazakhstan and Sweden raised the reports of mass graves and the imprisoned journalists. Reuters uncovered the massacre and has pieced together how it unfolded.

Detained Myanmar journalist Wa Lone (C) is escorted by police to a court in Yangon in his continuing trial on February 14, 2018.
