United Nations envoy: This time in Syria is unsafe, violent, worrying

One of the most confounding - and risky - aspects of the six-year-conflict in Syria is that its roster of combatants continues to broaden.

"Russia can push the regime to commit to seeking a real peace in Syria, a peace that helps the Syrian people", Haley said. Islamic State has been routed from most of its territory but still holds pockets of the Euphrates River valley.

A senior Syrian official on Tuesday warned Israel that it would face "surprises" if it launches any attacks on his country, claiming the Jewish state mistakenly thinks Syrian forces are incapable of defending the country.

Now another subplot is emerging, involving one of America's strongest allies: Israel.

The interception of an Iranian drone that targeted Israel suggests that the chances for a war between Israel and Iran-led forces, the first Israel-Shia war, have increased, General (ret.) Amos Yadlin, the former head of Israel's military intelligence told a conference call on Saturday. Israel answered quickly, shooting down the drone and then sending F-16 fighter jets into Syria to take out the command centre that launched the drone. Macron's comments come days after anti-aircraft fire downed an Israeli warplane returning from a bombing raid on Iran-backed positions in Syria.

Ali Akbar Velayati, the top foreign policy adviser to Iranian supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, defended his country's presence in Syria, saying Iran was acting on behalf of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, whose armed forces have resisted a rebel and jihadi uprising since 2011.

The Iranian spokesman made the remarks in reaction to German government spokesperson Steffen Seibert, who claimed "Iran's military engagement in Syria and Lebanon, in particular the militias it controls, is leading to a unsafe escalation in the Syrian civil war".

"We are seeing (Iranians) continuing to invest billions in missiles and trying to settle in Syria", he continued.

The warnings came in light of Israel's "sense" that the worldwide community is not taking Iran's entrenchment in Syria seriously.
