Some Indiana residents critical of President Trump's food stamp plan

The proposal, called America's Harvest Box, would replace about half of the money more than 80 percent of low income families receive from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program with a box of non-perishable food, grown and produced in the United States.

The packages recipients would be given would not include fresh fruits or vegetables. Is this the best way to balance our budget? "I think the idea that we seem to be in this proposal going back to the days of government cheese", Gray said.

The USDA says the delivered food would be nutritious and 100 percent US grown and produced. The proposal would affect the 38 million American households that receive at least $90 a month in government assistance.

The new boxes will be "a Rube-Goldberg designed system of commodity distribution via food boxes that will be administratively costly, inefficient, stigmatizing, and prone to failure, and that will return the country to Depression-era anti-hunger approaches", said the group in a statement.

"People do misuse their food stamps or they blow it all on junk food", said current food stamp recipient, Douglas Powers.

This wouldn't be the first time the Trump administration tried to make huge changes to the SNAP program. The SNAP program is largely successful the way it is, and claims of fraud are way overblown.

Andrew Lemmon, program director at Society of St. Andrew, said about 600,000 Mississippians are food insecure and often have to make tough decisions on whether to buy food or other expenses.

She said they will start knocking on her agency's door to help feed themselves and their families, stretching already strained resources even thinner. The USDA spokesperson did not specify, however, whether recipients would have any choice in what is placed in the boxes.

"The food stamps give you an opportunity to go and choose what your kids like, what they want".
