Ledecka stuns Alpine skiing women's super-G in Pyeongchang

After remaining absent from Winter Olympics for so long, American World Cup alpine ski racer, Lindsey Vonn who is the most American World Cup alpine ski racer failed to earn any medal in her first Olympic event in eight years on Saturday morning (stateside: Friday evening).

"I knew exactly what I needed to do", she said.

"I think the power is coming from her to the whole Czech team and we can try harder and do our best". I was just trying to do my best run, said Ledecka, who appeared stunned by her achievement.

Under clear blue skies, Czech Ledecka, running 26th, completed a flawless run to deliver one of the biggest upsets in Winter Olympics, stunning fans, her rivals, and even broadcasters who had already crowned Veith the victor.

The defending Olympic champion in the ladies' super-G, Veith looked to have retained her title as she sat in gold medal position with all of the leading contenders for glory having completed their runs.

"I gave it everything I had", Vonn said.

"In Sochi [where she won in 2014], it was a bit different".

Also yesterday's, Marit Bjoergen equalled her compatriot Ole Einar Bjoerndalen as the most decorated athlete in Winter Games history as she anchored Norway to victory in the 4x5km cross country relay, claiming her 13th medal. "She deserves it, I want to congratulate her". She was just 0.07 of a second behind Goggia in the downhill and 0.04 behind in super-G.

Her inspiration to the Czech team extends to her proud father, who said he may now write a song about her. "The favourites have a lot of pressure", added the olympic champion in the downhill in Vancouver (2010).

It is not her best event. Vonn is considered one of the greatest female ski racers in history.

Can you blame her, given all the injuries and setbacks that have disrupted her career the past few years?

Though she qualified for all five Alpine skiing events in South Korea, she'll only be competing in three - the super-G, downhill, and combined - in what is likely her final Winter Games. "Ester Ledecka has the gold!", they shouted immediately after she crossed the finish line.

She also used her platform after the race to speak out on the tragic school shooting in Florida this week that left 17 dead at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

Going first during her Super-G race prevented her from seeing how other skiers reacted to problem areas on the course.

"She's smarter and more creative than a robot", Reiter said.

Austria's Anna Veith was in the lead, and the favorites had already competed in the women's super-G. Hes been such a big part of my life, and I really hoped that he would be alive to see me.

The 19-year-old, who was born in the USA to a British father and Malaysian mother, was in fourth place going into her last of three runs, but then landed all her tricks to finish with 84.80 points.
