Donald Trump suggests arming teachers could prevent school massacres

The president is scheduled to meet with state and local officials on school safety at the White House Thursday - and with governors on Friday - as part of an ongoing dialogue following the tragedy in Parkland.

The cyclical aftermath of the nation's mass shooting has repeated itself several times during Trump's year-old presidency, including with the deadliest mass shooting in modern USA history when 52 people were killed on the Las Vegas strip last October, and when 26 people were killed at a church service in Sutherland Springs, Texas, in November.

That cycle is slightly different this time.

Not every student at the Florida school was calling for more gun control.

"If you had a teacher. who was adept at firearms, it could very well end the attack very quickly", said Trump, who acknowledged the idea would be controversial. A White House statement said Trump was looking at a bill that would strengthen federal gun background checks. "We call B.S".

Survivors and relatives of victims from the Florida high school massacre have delivered emotional pleas to Donald Trump in a sit-down session with the president.

The president did take time on Sunday to criticize the Federal Bureau of Investigation for failing to act on a lead about the alleged gunman, 19-year-old Nikolas Cruz, who police say has admitted to conducting the armed rampage with a legally purchased AR-15 rifle.

What do his critics say of Trump's move?

Trump once tweeted that Hillary Clinton was "wrong" for saying he wanted "guns brought into the school classroom". And, as NPR's Colin Dwyer reports, one tweet in particular has caught some criticism from within his own party. "You can keep all of your fake and meaningless "thoughts and prayers".

As a grieving Florida community demanded action on guns, Trump on Tuesday ordered the Justice Department to move to ban devices like the bump stocks.

Some of the students and parents who lived through the Florida shooting or lost a child when a gunman opened fire, killing 17 people, fought back tears or raised their voices as they urged the president to find a solution.

Trump accuses Obama of inaction over Russian Federation meddling
Trump has repeatedly downplayed and doubted Russian meddling and its effects on the American political process in 2016 and beyond. When asked about the president's position on concealed carry reciprocity or an assault rifle ban, she declined to answer.

What the president will ultimately do is unclear.

"We can do more to protect our children", Trump said at a White House event, insisting school safety is now a top priority for his administration.

Translation: The NRA supports further incursions against the Second Amendment, but they really don't want them, as they are ineffective in curbing gun violence. Wayne LaPierre, one of the leaders of the NRA, is also scheduled to speak.

"If ATF tries to ban these devices after admitting repeatedly that it lacks the authority to do so, that process could be tied up in court for years, and that would mean bump stocks would continue to be sold", she said in a statement this week.

He kept the AR-15 he allegedly used in the massacre locked in a gun safe with a few other firearms.

Now, Trump is suggesting he's open to several modest steps that can be taken which could draw support from both sides.

It described the margin as "the highest level of support" for stricter gun control since it began surveys on the question in 2008.

The White House on Tuesday indicated new age limits could be up for debate.

"Some Democrats argued the proper way to handle bump stocks was through legislation". "The shooter holds his or her trigger finger in place, while maintaining forward pressure on the barrel and backward pressure on the pistol grip while firing", it says " This modification can be done legally and allows the user to fire at rates similar to those of automatic weapons. But he also sought to use the shooting to criticize the nation's leading law enforcement agency. "I have no issue with slowing down purchases for people that show all the basic warning signs". He stayed there until 10th grade, when he was transferred to Stoneman Douglas.

The shooting has reignited the US debate on gun control.

The FBI said Friday that someone who knew Cruz called an agency tip line on January 5 and left information about Cruz's "gun ownership, desire to kill people, erratic behavior, and disturbing social media posts, as well as the potential of him conducting a school shooting".
