The Zambian government announced at the weekend that all gatherings, including church services, were now banned in areas affected by the spread of cholera, according to The Tablet.

The United States (US) government has also provided cholera interventions, including chlorine drops that will sanitise more than 120 million litres of water to make it safe to drink, responding to Government's call for help to contain cholera. The Zambian bishops' conference has followed suit to avoid potential disease spread by touch: there will be no handshake of peace in the areas where the Mass still takes place.

The Archdiocese of Lusaka has canceled all church-sponsored programs, while the Seventh Day Adventist Church suspended all church gatherings and advised members to worship at home.

Police were seen bundling several protesters into vehicles although officers were unable to confirm how many people had been detained in connection with the clashes. We pray for God's peace, comfort and encouragement during this time of national crisis.

In a statement, the Ministry of Health said Lusaka recorded 83 new cases while 12 other cases were recorded in other parts of the country, bringing the cumulative figures since the outbreak of the disease in October 2017 to 2,905.

The WHO recommends that vaccination against cholera be considered in emergencies and other high-risk scenarios, as planning is underway to vaccinate a further one million people living in known cholera hot spots across the country later this year.

The cholera outbreak was initially linked to contaminated water from shallow wells, but investigations indicated that contaminated food was the main culprit. Three restaurants have been shut down after the cholera bacterium was discovered in their establishments.

Cholera causes acute watery diarrhea.

President Edgar Lungu on December 30 directed the military to help to fight the spread of the waterborne disease.
