Visiting WHO Director General holds talks with Mailu on universal health care

During a visit to the plague-shaken nation of Madagascar, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), called for a $4 million investment to effectively combat the biological threat.

"The objective of my visit is to discuss progress Kenya has made in health sector and how we can strengthen our cooperation", he said.

Ghebreyesus, who is visiting Kenya for the first time since he was appointed WHO's DG, made the commitment when he paid a courtesy call on President Kenyatta at State House, Nairobi yesterday.

The WHO chief had earlier held discussion with Kenya's Cabinet Secretary for Health Cleopa Mailu to discuss strategic areas of partnership aimed at revitalizing health care services in the country.

Hybrids, EVs comprise majority of Norway new vehicle sales
That's up from 40 percent in 2016 and far ahead of other countries, where electrified vehicles make up a very small percentage of new-car sales.

Other pillars of President Kenyatta's Big Four action plan are increasing access to affordable housing, ensuring food and nutritional security as well as creating jobs for young people by expanding the manufacturing sector.

Speaking to reporters in Kenyan capital Nairobi, Ghebreyesus said the global health agency will strengthen partnership with Kenya to attain ambitious targets like universal health coverage.

"This unprecedented pneumonic plague outbreak was contained due to the tireless efforts of Malagasy health workers and partners", Ghebreyesus said in a thank you to partners in the fight. He said he has laid down the plan and is set to implement it to ensure Kenyans have access to improved and affordable healthcare services.

Uhuru welcomed the move and said that since Kenya has a relatively young population, achieving UHC will not be problem. Those funds went to the delivery of medicines and supplies, bolstering governmental efforts, sharing guidelines on case management and safe burials, surveillance and lab testing, training of local identifiers and strengthening public health efforts at ports and airports. "We are looking at ensuring that it is affordable and efficient, otherwise it will collapse".
