Terror funding case: NIA to file chargesheet today

Lashkar-e-Taiba chief Hafiz Saeed, Hizbul Mujahideen head Syed Salahuddin and 10 others were on Thursday named by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in a chargesheet for funding terror attacks with an aim to secede Jammu and Kashmir.

Refusing to divulge the names against whom the agency is pressing charges, the officials said that a substantial number of material and technical evidence have been gathered during the probe to file a charge sheet in the case. The prosecuting agency, under the anti-terror law, has to file a chargesheet within six months, failing which the accused is eligible for bail.

According to reports, all the Kashmiri separatists have been accused of conspiring to wage war against the government of India by carrying out terrorist and secessionist activities in Jammu and Kashmir.

Some 300 witnesses have been examined during the course of investigation.

The charges have been pressed under the non-bailable Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act which entails punishment of seven years in jail if the allegations are proven, and anti-terror provisions of the Indian Penal Code. "Analysis of documents and digital devices showed that the accused carried out terrorist attacks and orchestrated violence and stone-pelting as part of a well-planned criminal conspiracy", he said.

The charege-sheet says that the NIA teams conducted searches at over 60 locations in Jammu and Kashmir, Haryana and New Delhi and seized over 950 documents and over 600 electronic devices.

The others include Mirwaiz Umar Farooq's close aide Aftab Hilali Shah alias Shahid Ul Islam, Geelani's son-in-law Altaf Ahmad Shah alias Altaf Fantosh, the spokesperson for Tehreek-e-Hurriyat Ayaz Akbar, Peer Saifullah, Raja Merajuddin Kalwal and businessman Zahoor Ahmad Shah (Watali).

The agency has charged the Hurriyat leaders with acting under the overall guidance of and instructions from Saeed and Salahuddin and their "Pakistani handlers" and plotting strategies to launch violent protests. The money is also routed through fake and bogus companies floated overseas and remitted to the Hurriyat leaders in the state.

On Thursday, the National Investigation Agency had filed the charge sheet.

The NIA has filed a case against the Hurriyat leaders on May 30 following a sting operation by a television channel after Nayeem Khan allegedly confessed that Hurriyat leaders had been receiving funds from Pakistan for subversive activities in the Kashmir Valley.
