Study details risks of light smoking

They specifically looked at the cardiovascular effects of people who smoked one, five or twenty cigarettes per day compared to those who had never smoked. Since the average cigarette pack contains 20 cigarettes, the researchers expected that the risk of heart disease or stroke for a one-cigarette-per-day smoker would be just 5 percent of that of a pack-a-day user. But a new study shows the risk exists even with a minimal amount of smoking.

In fact, it carries about half the risk of smoking 20 cigarettes a day.

Instead, men who smoked just one cigarette a day still shared a full 46 percent of the increased odds for heart disease that a heavy smoker had, and 41 percent of the risk for stroke.

The analysis for women revealed even higher estimates of risk associated with smoking about one cigarette per day: 57 percent for coronary heart disease and 31 percent for stroke.
