Sri Lanka lifts ban on alcohol sales to women

Women in Sri Lanka will soon be legally allowed to treat themselves to their favourite tipple, after the country's government announced that it has done away with a law banning them from buying alcohol.

Women were also not allowed to work in any alcoholic manufacturing outlets or retail stores.

Section 12 (c) of the 1955 Excise Notification had stated: "No liquor shall be sold or given to a woman within the premises of a tavern", which is interpreted as anywhere with a licence to sell alcohol.

Spokane Tribe Casino set to open Monday
That history is displayed all over the new casino, among the 450 machines and 12 game tables. In spite of the opposition, the Spokane tribe moved forward with construction.

The law effectively barred women from purchasing or being in possession of alcohol within an on-trade premise, preventing women, technically, from working in such venues.

Issuing a statement the ministry said that Minister of Finance Mangala Samaraweera has revoked the prohibition on selling liquor to women and employing women in places where liquor is manufactured or sold. It was not immediately clear when the changes would come into force. Two years ago, Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena said the number of women consuming liquor has "drastically" risen in recent years.

"Alcohol consumption is very low among local women mainly due to the cultural restrictions".
