Pres. Rouhani: Iran always backs integrated, united Iraq

President Hassan Rouhani and the secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, Ali Shamkhani, made the comments during talks in Tehran with the prime minister of Iraq's Kurdish autonomous region.

The Iranian consulate in Erbil said that the visit by the delegation is positive and important, as it is the first by the KRG PM since Iraq opposed the referendum and following the decision by a federal court labeling the Kurdistan Region's vote as "unconstitutional".

The referendum was also condemned in neighbouring Iran and Turkey.

Rouhani said that all the groups from any ethnicity, especially the Kurds, should be able to uphold their legal and legitimate rights within the framework of the Iraqi constitution and territorial integrity.

The president also referred to Iranian investors' readiness to participate in the development projects of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq and welcomed the Iraqi Kurdish business people's more active role in the Iranian market, saying: "We want more developed and prosperous Iran and Iraq, and this is in the interest of all nations of the region".

Shamkhani said Tehran "will do everything in its power to support efforts to ease the differences" between Baghdad and the Kurdish regional capital Arbil, official IRNA news agency reported.

He said that although bilateral talks in Erbil and Baghdad are ongoing to solve problems, due to the importance and complexity of existing issues, global and regional efforts are required to bring Kurdistan and Iraq closer to each other.

We appreciate Iran's support in fighting ISIS, said Barzani, adding: "We will not allow any threats from Kurdistan territory against Iran".
