Natural Cycles contraceptive app faces criticism following reports of 37 unwanted pregnancies

Natural Cycles, however, responded that "no contraception is 100 percent", and unwanted pregnancies is an unfortunate risk as with any type of contraception. Flawless use of the pill should give it a 99% chance of being effective; typical use will give it a 91% chance of preventing pregnancy.

The hospital reported the app to the Medical Products Agency, the Swedish government agency for regulation and surveillance of drugs and medical devices.

The app uses an algorithm to tell women when they have the highest and lowest chances of getting pregnant, but ultimately, it relies on men and women changing their behavior. The idea is that couples looking to avoid pregnancy should steer clear of sex when the app alerts them of their fertile periods, though clearly the method is not foolproof.

The Södersjukhuset hospital in Sweden participated in a study on the contraceptive last September and found that least 37 out of more than 600 pregnant women who had sought abortion at the hospital used Natural Cycles. If it is safe, it'll be deemed a "green day" and you can go right ahead; if it's not safe, it's a "red day" and you'll need to use protection.

Natural Cycles has launched an internal investigation with its clinical department to look into the matter.

"As our user base increases, so will the amount of unintended pregnancies coming from Natural Cycles app users, which is an inevitable reality", the spokesman said. It now has 700,000 users worldwide. The app's other selling points are that it doesn't come with the same side effects (mood swings, nausea, headaches) as traditional contraceptive methods and costs much less at $9.99 a month (or a yearly fee of $79.99).

European Union-certified Natural Cycles app that claims 99 percent efficacy on flawless use and 93 percent effectiveness on typical use is now under fire for falling short of its promise to prevent pregnancies.

Natural Cycles gained certification in the European Union at a contraceptive method in February last year, and is one of numerous fertility-tracking apps to rise to prominence in recent years.

The app costs $79.99 (about £40) for a yearly subscription and was officially certified for birth control in Europe a year ago and is only intended for fertility monitoring in the US.

"At first sight, the numbers mentioned in the media are not surprising given the popularity of the app and in line with our efficacy rates", the company continued.

"The fact that this app says it's 93 per cent effective is quite good, but that's only assuming people are meeting the standard model for ovulating at the same time every month and they're using it correctly", she says. In November 2017, the app, founded by husband and wife duo Dr. Raoul Scherwitzl and Dr. Elina Berglund, received over $30 million in funding.

"There is a big trend that women move away from hormonal contraception, and Natural Cycles can provide a helpful option for these women", he said, noting that it will help "decrease the unwanted pregnancy rates" overall by offering women more contraceptive options.
