Liberia's Ruling Unity Party Expels Liberian President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf

Liberia's outgoing ruling Unity Party has expelled President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf for alleged breach of the party's constitution.

Throughout the 2017 election process, several calls were made by partisans to expel the Standard Bearer Emeritus, Mr. and Mrs. Wesseh for campaigning against the party's Presidential and Vice Presidential candidates in gross violation of the party's constitution, the release stated.

"The behavior of the expelled persons. constitutes sabotage and undermined the existence of the party", a statement from the party said.

During the campaigns, it was speculated that Sirleaf did not support her deputy Boakai's bid for the presidency after she failed to appear at his side during key campaign events.

Sirleaf was also accused by party leaders of meddling in the presidential elections in which its candidate suffered a bruising defeat alleging that she held inappropriate private meetings with election magistrates before the October 10 vote.

The Unity Party founded in 1984 said on Sunday that Johnson-Sirleaf, Liberia's leader for the past 12 years encouraged Liberians to vote for the former World Player of the Year, Weah instead of vice-president, Joseph Boakai.
