Flights disrupted as cow enters Ahmedabad airport

Airports Authority of India chairman Guruprasad Mohapatra has confirmed that on Thursday morning two worldwide flights could not land at Ahmedabad because of a "cow situation" at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel global Airport and had to divert to Mumbai.

Sources said that the animal was in the airport premises for about 90 minutes before Central Industrial Security Force guards chased it out.

The Airports Authority of India confirmed the situation and said that the "cow entered through cargo side".

Airport sources said CISF personnel and other staff used scare-guns and sticks to drive the cow out of the operational area.

It took about one-and-a-half hours to get the cow out.

Both flights were diverted to Mumbai and other flights were delayed.

But passengers Tuesday weren't convinced. 'No one is taking responsibility for them not being back at this point'. He said they made it to France nonetheless, but their airline still doesn't know where their bags are.

"We have ordered an inquiry and sought a report on it", Ahmedabad airport director told news agency ANI. "He has also been asked to ascertain involvement of any human negligence in the incident".

"Directives have been given to take stringent steps to avoid any such occurrences in future", said an AAI statement.

The official data shows that there were more than thousand incidents of bird strikes and animal colliding with planes happened at various Indian airports in 2017.

The incident has raised security concerns in the run-up to the high profile visit of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is scheduled to land in Ahmedabad on January 17.

There were 81 instances of animals straying into the paths of planes a year ago. In February a year ago, an IndiGo flight at Ahmedabad was delayed on the takeoff strip because of the presence of rabbits on the runway. In 2014, around 40 such incidents were reported.
