Federal judge blocks Trump's plan to terminate DACA

The issue also enjoys a fair measure of bipartisan backing in Congress.

Just saying: Yes, Republicans have serious problems finding a way forward on this in their conferences (especially in the House.) But it's not like Democrats are in lock step on supporting whatever bipartisan agreement is released.

But that agreement was cast into doubt the same day when a firestorm erupted after reports surfaced that President Trump, during a meeting with lawmakers over an immigration bill, asked why the USA was accepting immigrants from "shithole countries" referring reportedly to immigrants from Haiti and Africa.

Senate negotiators were trying to get legislation assembled by next week so it could possibly be attached to a spending bill that Congress will have to pass to avoid government shutdowns after Jan 19.

Even among Republicans, 64 per cent favor embracing a Democratic aspiration to make Dreamers part of the voting public.

On Tuesday, Trump appeared to dangle both the permanent legalization of the so-called "Dreamers" (illegal immigrant children brought to the U.S by illegal immigrant parents) and the prospect of comprehensive immigration reform before a group of senior congressional leaders.

Without congressional action, the program will end March 5.

Late Tuesday, a court ruling added a new element to an already unpredictable environment. For now, there is no mechanism by which DACA recipients can reapply for the program.

Maybe - or maybe the Democrats would be blamed, and their political and legislative hopes (and those of the Dreamers) dashed for years.

"We've got to get 60 votes, meaning we've got to get votes on the Republican side and the Democratic side, and the agreement is going to be DACA and some border security elements", he said.

County emergency manager Jeff Gater said officials decided not to send one sooner out of concern it might not be taken seriously. The disaster was already unfolding when Santa Barbara County officials sent out their first cellphone alert at 3:50 a.m.

Or, as Sen. John Cornyn, the second-ranked Republican in the Senate, put it: "Six people can't agree to something that will bind the Congress". He embraced a bewildering array of positions on immigration, veering from apparent support for a broad overhaul of the system to advocating hardline demands that Democrats reject. That would allow beneficiaries of the law to receive three-year renewable legal status.

While Trump has said he did not make the remark about Haiti, Sen. "But we do need a wall for a fairly good portion". No. People with the requisite work or educational background in other countries apply to USA consulates for the lottery and, if drawn, go through the usual vetting process for any immigrant. The billion-dollar plan would construct and replace barriers along 700 miles of border, which would cover just under half of the 2,000-mile U.S. -Mexico border.

A judge said maybe racism was behind President Donald Trump's decision to shut down a program protecting young undocumented immigrants from deportation.

Immigration talks emerged as Democrats pushed for the federal government to provide some kind of legal protection for immigrants who came to the United States as undocumented minors.

And Trump has made it clear that without money to build it, DACA will die.

Steve Yale-Loehr, a professor of immigration law at Cornell University, who co-wrote the leading 21-volume treatise on the issue, predicted that Congress will do what it did a few weeks ago - kick the can down the road. The former staffer, who spoke on condition of anonymity, noted that the President is often a moving target where policy is concerned.

The Deferred Action for Parents of Americans program was meant to provide a level of amnesty to immigrants who came to the US illegally as children.

As of now, there seems to be little appetite for forcing a shutdown.

United We Dream, by contrast, is demanding that Democrats instigate a government shutdown January 19 by refusing to support a short-term spending bill that doesn't legalize the Dreamers.
