Fappening: Celebgate hacker who 'stole nude photos of celebrities' charged

A CT man has plead guilty to a felony computer hacking charge related to the 2014 "Celebgate" cybercrime in which celebrities' nude photos were exposed on the internet, federal authorities say.

George Garofano, of Northford, Connecticut, agreed to plead guilty on Thursday (11 January) to illegally accessing over 250 Apple iCloud accounts in violation of United States hacking law.

Though many victims were celebrities in Los Angeles, prosecutors said a number of victims were non-celebrities in CT.

According to a new report, 26-year-old George Garofano was charged on January 10 with utilizing a phishing scheme in order to hack into hundreds of iCloud accounts, with many belonging to celebrities.

Prosecutors say Garofano sent emails that appeared to be from Apple encouraging victims to reveal usernames and passwords, or to enter them on a website where he could retrieve them.

The information allowed Garofano to steal personal information, including photos and videos, the plea agreement stated.

Although many of Garofano's victims were A-listers, including Gabrielle Union, Kaley Cuoco and soccer star Hope Solo, many non-celebrities who live in CT were also targeted, according to officials. The FBI reckons Garofano actually ransacked more than 250 cloud accounts, however, in a plea deal he 'fessed up to just one charge.

Another Illinois man, 29-year-old Edward Majerczyk, was sentenced last year to nine months in federal prison. The suspects in the latter two cases were sentenced to prison.

In an emailed statement to the Hartford Courant, Garofano's lawyer, Richard Lynch, described him as "a good person who was taken advantage of by several hackers more sophisticated than himself".

"It is a sexual violation", she told Vanity Fair in 2014.
