Dakar Rally 2018: Stage 7

The Spaniard had been trailing Peterhansel for the majority of the 260-mile stage until the French driver hit a rock attempting to overtake a bike competitor in which he sustained heavy damage to the left-rear suspension of his Peugeot 3008DKR Maxi. But a crash stalled him for almost two hours, and Sainz was first into Uyuni. "I think I broke my knee, and from then the pain made me slow down", reported Barreda.

Spain's Carlos Sainz took the overall lead in the Dakar Rally by winning Saturday's seventh stage from La Paz to Uyuni in Bolivia. By the time the French rally great repaired the left rear wheel, suspension and radiator in his Peugeot, he was 1 hour, 45 minutes behind Sainz, who was almost at the finish.

Sainz himself felt it was a hard day in Bolivia, particularly when off-piste driving was required, but he says the whole rally is all about keeping focus and surviving, particularly after the troubles the other three Peugeot drivers - Peterhansel, Cyril Despres and Sebastien Loeb - have endured in the opening seven stages.

Peterhansel, 52, had started the day with a comfortable 27min 10sec gap to Carlos Sainz, his Peugeot teammate who is now the race leader.

Mr Abe will then visit fellow Baltic states Latvia and Lithuania, before continuing on to Bulgaria, Serbia and Romania.

But at the halfway point of the world's toughest rally, Sainz won't be feeling confident.

In the motorbike category, Joan Barreda dominated, flying on his Honda through every checkpoint. It's looking really bad. "I'm sure it's broken, I can't even put my foot on the floor".

After finishing Saturday's stage from La Paz to Uyuni in a time of 5hrs 19min 53sec - 8:43min behind victor Joan Barreda Bort of Spain - 2016 champion Price is 13:34 behind leader Adrien van Beveren. The third Toyota of Bernhard ten Brinke continues to round out the top five less than fives minutes off of de Villiers while sixth place competitor Jakub Przygonski for Orlen Team/X-Raid is nearly an hour further back.
