Two Republican senators said they did not remember President Donald Trump referring to Haiti and African nations with a vulgar comment, according to a statement they released on Twitter.

But Sen. Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) and Sen.

Stephanopoulos repeatedly tried to have Perdue clarify what he meant and asked point-blank if Trump did not in fact say the crass word during the meeting. They did not condemn or outright deny the comments.

Durbin's comments follow Trump's denial of a Washington Post report. "This was not the language used", he tweeted. Jeff Flake (R-AZ) reiterated to Stephanopoulos that though he was not in the Thursday meeting himself, his colleagues who were told him shortly thereafter that Trump had made the "shithole" comment "before it went public".

Reports that Trump used vulgar language to describe Haiti and African countries, while opining that the US does not except more immigrants from countries like Norway, during an immigration meeting on Thursday elicited widespread condemnation from both sides of the aisle.

Cotton and Perdue, both staunch conservatives on immigration, are co-sponsors of the RAISE Act, which aims to dramatically reshuffle how America's visa application process works in favor of migrants with certain marketable skills. Tim Scott told the Post and Courier in Charleston that he had spoken with Graham, who confirmed to him the reports of the comments were "basically accurate".

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) said Friday that during the meeting he challenged Trump. Nor have other attendees at the meeting.

If true, it's worrying that two U.S. senators have been stricken with such a devastating memory-related malady, and I hope they find the help they need.
