CES 2018: Tech's biggest show disrupted by blackout

Batteries and motors are getting smaller and more powerful, making electric scooters and even single-wheeled devices good for all day use over many miles. For an event that showcases the latest and greatest of technological advances, a power outage is all it takes to bring all of it down to earth.

After about an hour, only the south and north halls in the plaza were without power. CNET senior producer Mariel Myers tweeted a photo showing that the Samsung booth was still running, adding that the company had their own private power service.

"The outage is a bit ironic, given CES' status as one of the world's biggest technology conferences", according to Geek Wire.

Companies affected by the outage included LG, Samsung and Sony, The Verge reports, along with tech start-up firms that "paid thousands of dollars to have a presence on the massive show floor".

Ole Miss Women's Basketball Takes Hard Fall to No. 4 Mississippi State
The problem going forward is that when Vivians and McCowan aren't on the court, Mississippi State is really struggling. We're a lot younger than State. "Coach (Schaefer) always tells us when our names are called, be ready", William said.

Another attendee, Derek Kerton, asked which brands were going to make the most of the blackout opportunity on their stands, and compared the situation to the blackout during the US Super Bowl.

A partial blackout is seen during the 2018 CES in Las Vegas, Nevada, U.S. January 10, 2018 in this picture obtained from social media. A central theme of this year's show is "Smart Cities", and automakers and other companies have used elaborate virtual reality displays of tree-lined streets with smooth flowing traffic to promote technology and investments aimed at relieving urban congestion.

LAS VEGAS-On the first day of CES, Tuesday, a record 1.33 inches of rain fell, the wettest one-day downpour since the Weather Service began keeping records in 1937.

Similarly, the hotel parking lot for Harrah's Las Vegas casino became a flood zone during the storm.
