Ceres man kills mother after argument over video game, police say

Authorities responded to a home on River Valley Circle in Ceres around 9:50 p.m. Thursday and found the woman had been shot in the head, according to a statement from Ceres police.

During their investigation, police learned Matthew Nicholson, 28, had been in his bedroom playing video games when he became upset and started yelling. Nicholson then blamed her for the broken headset and threatened to kill both his mother and father. The 68-year-old victim was transported to an area hospital where she later died.

Nicholson grabbed a handgun from inside home and fired two rounds into a wall before turning the gun on his mother and shooting her in the head.

Nicholson's father wrestled the gun away from Nicholson, who got in a vehicle and drove to a relative's home in Riverbank, police said.

Gelling signs with Warriors
The 27-year-old played for the Warriors' feeder club Auckland Vulcans in 2011 before heading to England. In a blog post, he revealed going back to university or even playing rugby union were possibilities.

Officers were quickly able to locate his vehicle during a high risk vehicle stop in Riverbank.

Nicholson drove off but was stopped in the town of Riverbank. He was arrested and taken into custody.

Ceres police took Nicholas to the police department for questioning then later booked him into the Stanislaus County Jail where he's being held without bail.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call Detective Bryan Ferreira at 209-538-5616.
