Bangladeshi man indicted for NY bomb attack

Ullah, 27, was the only person seriously hurt in the December 11 attack.

Ullah, who immigrated to the United States from Bangladesh in 2011, appeared for a formal arraignment before U.S. District Judge Richard Sullivan of the Southern District of NY wearing blue and gray jail scrubs, appearing to move gingerly as he took his seat between his attorneys, Amy Gallicchio and Julia Gatto of the Federal Defenders of NY.

"At this moment, not guilty", said Akayed Ullah, 27, when U.S. District Judge Richard Sullivan asked him for his plea at a hearing in federal court in Manhattan.

The federal grand jury indicted Ullah on Wednesday with one count of providing and attempting to provide material support to the Islamic State (IS), and one count of using and attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction.

"In selecting this time and place, 's alleged goal in the bombing was painfully clear: to inflict as much damage as possible, and to strike fear into the hearts of New Yorkers in the name of ISIS", U.S. Attorney Geoffrey Berman said in announcing the indictment.

Ullah was hospitalized for injuries suffered after the bomb ignited but failed to detonate as intended, while three other people suffered minor injuries, according to prosecutors.

Ullah was previously charged in a criminal complaint filed by prosecutors shortly after his arrest last month.

They also said in court papers that he admitted he wanted to cause carnage to avenge USA aggression toward the Islamic State group. Inside Ullah's passport, which was recovered from his home, was a handwritten note that read, "O AMERICA, DIE IN YOUR RAGE", according to the complaint.

His lawyer did not immediately comment.

Sullivan told Gallicchio to direct her request to prison authorities first.
