'Arrogant' surgeon burned his initials onto patients' livers during transplants

'Arrogant' surgeon burned his initials onto patients' livers during transplants

The court was told the surgeon's actions were a "naive and foolhardy" attempt to relieve tension in the operating theatre, but had no affect on the medical outcomes.

He used an argon beam machine, an instrument created to seal bleeding blood vessels, to sear his initials "SB" into their livers.

Simon Bramhall, 53, used an argon beam - usedto stop livers bleeding during operations and to highlight an area to be worked on - to sign "SB" into his patient's livers.

'What you did was an abuse of power and a betrayal of trust that these patients had invested in you.

Bramhall pleaded guilty in December to two counts of assault by beating after pleading not guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

Bramhall was sentenced to a 12-month community order, meaning he will carry out 120 hours of unpaid work, and fined £10,000.

Bramhall worked at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham for 12 years before he quit.

Mr Badenoch said of the initial transplant operation: "Mr Bramhall had to work exceptionally hard and use all of his skill to complete the operation".

Acknowledging that Bramhall's actions had not caused either patients" new liver to fail, Mr Badenoch said: "This case is about his practice on two occasions, without the consent of the patient and for no clinical reason whatever, to burn his initials on to the surface of a newly-transplanted liver'.

Labour Delays Decision On Fate Of Suspended MP Kelvin Hopkins
The 76-year-old leftwinger faces two claims of inappropriate conduct towards a 27-year-old activist and fellow MP Kerry McCarthy. The case of a Labour MP accused of sexual harassment has been sent to the party's disciplinary body for a full hearing.

One of the patients supporting the surgeon told the court how she had been given just three months to live in 2006 when Simon Bramhall told her he would take the decks to operate on her 15cm tumour.

'I accept that you didn't intend or foresee anything but the most trivial of harm would be caused'.

"It was what I would imagine the feeling is for someone who is a victim of rape", she said.

But asked about the doctor's motive, he said: "I can't speak in terms of why he did that".

"He accepted what he was doing was arrogant".

Prosecutor Tony Badenoch argued one of the patients suffered ongoing psychological harm from the act and continued to feel violated, the BBC reported.

"There was physical damage, some physical harm to the liver, although that's minor in terms of cell damage but it would be akin to a minor external burn".

He added he did not anticipate any further charges and there was no evidence Bramhall's colleagues covered up his actions. I think it should have been thrown out.

A large number of former patients of Bramhall turned up at court to show their support and gratitude to him.
