No Rerun; Supreme Court Cites Insufficient Evidence, Consequences

Liberia's Supreme Court told the electoral commission to proceed with organizing the final round of presidential elections that was initially scheduled November 7 but put on hold to probe allegations of fraud during the first round.

Immediately after the pronouncement was made given NEC the green light to go ahead with the Runoff election at a schedule date, dozens of Liberians from around the Capital of Monrovia and its environs were jubilation, as some shouted 'We will vote, We will vote, thanks to the Supreme Court, ' others were took exception.

The political leader of the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC), George Manneh Weah, Wednesday issued a caveat that his political organization will in no way sit down and see their democratic rights infringed upon.

However, judges ordered a clean-up of the much criticised voter registration roll be conducted before the second round, which was called after no single candidate gained more than 50 percent of the vote on October 10.

The Supreme Court on November 1 halted preparations for the second round to hear complaints lodged by presidential candidate Charles Brumskine, who came third as leader of the Liberty Party. Brumskine also questioned the professionalism of Liberia's electoral commission, demanding its commissioners be fired.
