NFL Will Consider Targeting Rule Similar to College Football's

On Wednesday afternoon, Vincent said the NFL will consider adding a "targeting" rule that is similar to the one that has sparked seemingly endless amounts of controversy at the college football level, as well as a punishment schedule for "non-football acts" such as the late hit that resulted in New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski being handed a one-game suspension.

The enforcement of the penalty would likely allow for possible ejections, which would be subject to replay review.

The NCAA put in their targeting rule before this year's college football season, with the rule specifically saying that "no player shall target and make forcible contact to the head or neck area of a defenseless opponent.with the helmet, forearm, hand, fist, elbow or shoulder". Burfict was carted off and placed in the concussion protocol, Smith-Schuster received a one-game suspension for the hit.

Aberdeen Caretaker Promises Resolution On Rangers Target Derek McInnes Today
Aberdeen coach Paul Sheerin expects the ongoing saga surrounding Derek McInnes' Pittodrie future to be resolved later on Thursday. Under-20s coach Paul Sheerin is understood to be taking his place in front of the media ahead of Friday's match against Dundee .

Vincent's comments came during a week in which the National Football League issued three suspensions, one of which was overturned on appeal, for on-field behavior by players during games.

In an effort to improve player safety, the league has tried to crack down on devastating hits. As we've seen around the college football world, there's definitely subjectivity used in determing whether a player should be ejected for targeting. Intent is not taken under consideration by officials when deciding whether or not to uphold a targeting penalty.

"We don't want to be in the business of ejecting players", Vincent said. "It is on our agenda to be discussed beginning in February", Vincent said.
