Iraqi paramilitary group: US troops may become targets after US Jerusalem decision

An Iranian-backed militia in Iraq threatened Thursday to attack United States forces in the country after President Donald Trump recognised Jerusalem as Israel's capital, while Baghdad summoned Washington's envoy.

"The decision by Trump on Al-Quds (Jerusalem) makes it legitimate to strike the American forces in Iraq", Al-Nojaba militia chief Akram al-Kaabi said in a statement.

The ministry also summoned U.S. Ambassador to Iraq Douglas Silliman to register its displeasure with the move, according to ministry spokesman Ahmed Mahjoob.

"We caution against the risky repercussions of this decision on the stability of the region and the world", an Iraqi government statement said. "The US administration has to backtrack on this decision to stop any risky escalation that would fuel extremism and create conditions favorable to terrorism".

Iraq's top Shi'ite cleric Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani condemned the decision and called on the "Umma", or Islamic nation, to unite its efforts and reclaim Jerusalem.

"This will not change the fact that Jerusalem is an occupied territory that needs to be returned to its legitimate Palestinian owners", he said.

Zinke Says Claim That Trump 'Stole' Public Land Is a Lie
Bears Ears has no oil or gas, Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke told reporters, though Grand Staircase-Escalante has coal . The company said it has "always viewed public lands as our special interest", company spokeswoman Corley Kenna said.

Dozens of Iraqis protested the decision in Baghdad, carrying signs saying "Jerusalem is Arab" and vowing to return in greater numbers the following day after Friday prayers.

Not only Iraq is protesting this decision of trump.

There are more than 5,000 USA troops in Iraq, part of an worldwide coalition providing air and ground support in Iraqi forces' fight against Islamic State militants.

The move however has angered Arab leaders across the region but raises particular concerns for American interests in Iraq and Syria, whose presence remains significant in those countries in the fight against the Islamic State (IS) and where the militias operate with impunity.

The ruling Dawa Party leader and former Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki in November announced that the US' presence in Iraq was causing instability and called on the withdrawal of USA troops.

Nujaba, mostly made up of Iraqis, has about 10,000 fighters, according to Reuters data.
