Google shuts down Chrome 'apps' section on Mac and Windows

Google shuts down Chrome 'apps' section on Mac and Windows

Google's replacement for Chrome apps will come in the form of what it refers to as PWAs or progressive web apps.

Google had announced back in August 2016 that it would end Chrome apps across Windows, Mac and Linux platforms citing the reason that less than 1 percent of users were using them. Extensions are also installed through the Chrome Web Store and usually live next to the address bar as buttons.

As spotted by Ron Amadeo over at Ars Technica, an email is being sent out to developers in which Google re-iterated what it said last August about Chrome Apps being scheduled to stop working on Windows, Mac & Linux in Q1 2018.

What's more, Google confirmed that its PWA's wouldn't be able to offer the full range of capabilities that Chrome Apps can, but said it was "investigating" ways to make the transition easier for developers whose apps are reliant on the pre-existing Chrome APIs.

Porter also claimed that George Soros is registering convicted felons to vote against men like Roy Moore , who "stood for God".

As explained in the report, there were two broad types of Chrome apps available to users. The hybrid online-meets-installed software launched earlier this year on Android, essentially bringing app features to websites. Because of this, other companies are jumping on the PWA bandwagon: it works on Samsung Android phones in the Samsung browser, Firefox on Android, and Opera on Android.

Support for Progessive Web Apps is becoming more available, with Microsoft building support for PWAs into Windows 10, and Apple is similarly building support for PWAs into Safari.

What has also now been made apparent is that Google is planning to replace Chrome Apps with PWAs on desktop systems. Both app categories will now be accessible only on Chrome OS and not the desktop.
