First US birth by woman with uterus transplant

First US birth by woman with uterus transplant

It took well over a year to determine if a woman who received a womb transplant would become the first in the US to give birth, transplant surgeons in Dallas said Monday.

Dr. Giuliano Testa, principal investigator for the uterine transplant clinical trial at Baylor, said there were lessons in the number of women who have sought to undergo the procedure. While three have been unsuccessful and one woman is now pregnant, the remaining four women are in different stages of the transplant process, and doctors say the baby offers them hope.

Doctors will remove the transplanted uterus after the first or second pregnancy because the mother can't stay on anti-rejection drugs indefinitely.

Experts agree results of the clinical trial could help women who are born without a uterus, lost their uterus or no longer possess function of the female organ.

The world's first baby born from a transplanted uterus was delivered in Sweden in 2014. The wombs are not meant to be permanent. A woman in Cleveland received a transplanted uterus in past year, but it was removed due to complications.

A 36-year-old registered nurse who has two children donated her uterus to the unnamed woman, Time said.

Australian Parliament OKs same-sex marriage
All amendments were struck down, and the bill passed unchanged from the one that cleared the Senate last week. Most gay marriage opponents accept that the Parliament has an overwhelming mandate to make the change.

The birth is being celebrated as a landmark achievement for Baylor University, where doctors reportedly began an ongoing research study in 2016 to help women who struggle with infertility.

The first birth as a result of a womb transplant in the United States has occurred in Texas, a milestone for the U.S. but one achieved several years ago in Sweden.

Baylor officials said Monday that eight transplants have been performed and that one of those women now is pregnant as a result.

Her story gave a sense of just how tenuous the nascent surgery is.

The first baby born in the United States to a woman who had a womb transplant was delivered by doctors at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas. The ones done in Sweden were from live donors, mostly from the recipients' mother or a sister. "This is not the same thing".
