Ed Sheeran just collected his MBE from Prince Charles

But after three albums and countless performances, the 26-year-old has been awarded an MBE for his services to the music industry at a ceremony at Buckingham Palace.

It's been quite a 2017 for the Suffolk-raised singer-songwriter, headlining Glastonbury in June following the all-conquering chart success of his third studio album Divide, which was released back in March, and was named the most-streamed artist on Spotify of the year.

The 26-year-old accepted an MBE from Prince Charles earlier today and looked very dapper in a blue-fitted suit.

At the end, Ed had a brief conversation with Prince Charles and told him that he was travelling to NY tomorrow for another gig.

He says his grandfather Bill was a "massive royalist".

Asked about the secret of his success, he played down his achievements, saying: "I think it's persistence".

Speaking to reporters after the ceremony, Sheeran said his late grandfather would have been pleased with his honor.

His songwriting skills have seen him collaborate with artists like Taylor Swift and he penned the hit Love Yourself for Justin Bieber.

Ed Sheeran from London is made an MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) by the Prince of Wales at an Investiture ceremony at Buckingham Palace, London.

To name a few of his musical achievements, Ed won a Grammy Award previous year and his latest album spent more than 15 weeks at the top of the charts.

Sheeran most recently released a reworking of his song "Perfect" with none other than Beyoncé, with whom he's performed on stage with before. "I think it's persistence". 'I don't have a vast amount of talent compared to other people.

He has also used his celebrity to support several charities, including children's hospices, anti-poverty campaigns and an AIDS charity.
