Air New Zealand cancels flights due to Rolls-Royce engine issues

Two flights were forced to return to Auckland this week after mechanical trouble, local media reported.

The firm said some engines on its Boeing 787-9 fleet require maintenance following recent "engine events".

Air New Zealand Ltd said on Thursday "two recent events" involving Rolls-Royce Holdings PLC Trent 1000 engines had prompted it to cancel and delay some global flights over the coming weeks, making it the latest airline to experience problems.

Rolls-Royce said in August that components on some Trent 1000 engines were wearing out earlier than expected, according to reports.

Japan's ANA Holdings Inc and Britain's Virgin Atlantic have also reported issues with the engines over the last 18 months.

Davis defends Brexit after talks branded 'embarrassment'
But the DUP says it would prevent Northern Ireland from leaving the European Union "on the same terms" as the rest of the UK. This would not be the same as "harmonisation" with the EU's rules, he said.

The New Zealand Transport Accident Investigation Commission (TAIC) is looking into two recent 787-9 flights that were turned back after takeoff after problems arose during the flight.

Rolls-Royce did not have spare engines available while the maintenance work was being undertaken, Air New Zealand said in an announcement to the stock exchange.

Air New Zealand chief operations integrity and standards officer David Morgan told the NZ Herald the the blades failed on the flight to Tokyo Narita, while exhaust gas temperature rises indicated problems with the engine.

"In addition to these changes, Air New Zealand is focused on securing replacement aircraft capacity".

"Our investigation team is working closely with the airline, Civil Aviation Authority, engine-manufacturer Rolls Royce, and our colleague agencies in the United Kingdom and USA".
