20-year-old Florida man was behind Uber hack

20-year-old Florida man was behind Uber hack

Uber, the ride-hailing smartphone app, paid a Florida hacker $100,000 to destroy data in the company's 2016 hack that resulted in the breach of 57 million users, Reuters reported.

The hackers in question were paid $100,000 to delete the information and keep quiet under the guise of the legitimate bug bounty program offered by Uber on the HackerOne bug bounty platform.

According to Marten Mickos, the CEO for HackerOne, in all cases when a bug bounty award is processed through HackerOne, the company receives identifying information of the recipient in the form of an IRS W-9 or W-8BEN form before payment of the award can be made. Reuters said Uber made the man sign a nondisclosure agreement, and verified that the data had been erased.

The second person was paid by the Florida-based hacker to, among other services, access Github, a site used by programmers to store code, in order to gain credentials to access Uber data, it added.

International Monetary Fund says China's banks need more capital after credit boom
China will draw on the recommendations, continue to deepen financial sector reform, take concrete steps to contain risks and strengthen cooperation with worldwide organizations, it said.

The hacker was described as a 20-year-old man in the report. Uber declined to comment on the matter to the news outlet.

Even if a company manages to contain and handle a data breach, it has a duty to report it to regulators, which Uber appears to have failed to do, aiming for a cover-up rather than mea culpa.

The payment was made through a bug hunter scheme called HackerOne, created to reward security researchers who identify weaknesses and issues in a company's software. HackerOne's CEO said that he couldn't discuss an individual customer's programs.

"None of this should have happened, and I will not make excuses for it".

However, Khosrowshahi emphasised that the incident did not breach Uber's corporate systems or infrastructure.
