US Airstrikes Kill Dozens of IS Fighters in Yemen

Government forces and the Saudi-led coalition also have fought against the al Qaeda branch in Yemen (AQAP) and ISIS, both of which are anti-government Sunni terror groups.

"US forces killed dozens of ISIS members in a strike on two ISIS training camps, October 16, in Al Bayda governorate, Yemen, disrupting the organization's attempts to train new fighters", the release stated on Monday.

The Pentagon's statement accused ISIS of running the training camps, saying they were training militants to use AK-47s and offering "endurance training".

The US military has carried out several airstrikes against AQAP fighters in different provinces of the war-torn Arab country since US President Donald Trump approved expanded military operations against the group.

A third added: "My house is directly under flight path nth co Dublin, watching beasts in the sky is scary, pilot deserves medal". While Storm Ophelia hasn't yet made landfall, its hurricane-force winds have already begun shaking Ireland.

A US official said the American airstrikes were the first targeting ISIS in Yemen, a country better known as the home of al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP). Carried out mostly by drones, the strikes are part of an increased effort to rein in the al Qaeda affiliate's terror and territorial ambitions.

The head of U.S. Naval Forces Central Command, which is responsible for safeguarding the waters off Yemen, said the United States and its allies had intercepted five weapons shipments from Iran destined for the Houthis, officials said at the time, which they said showed Iran's continuing influence in the region.

The camps in Al Bayda Governorate are considered "ungoverned spaces" and are used to train militants to be combat-ready soldiers, the Pentagon said in the statement.

The United States doesn't officially have troops on the ground in Yemen, but the Pentagon said it does support "ongoing counterterrorism operations" in the country against ISIS and al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) - described as the most risky of al Qaeda's branches.
