Ashley puts Newcastle United put up for sale

Mike Ashley has officially put Newcastle United up for sale.

Newcastle United ownder Mike Ashley announces his intention to sell the Premier League club, preferably before Christmas.

A process has now begun to find a buyer.

Newcastle's 52,000 capacity St James' Park is close to full most weeks with the club enjoying a passionate fan base. Meanwhile other reports have suggested that Ashley, who has been at the head of the club for a decade, wants a quick sale to ensure he avoids having to make.

The 53-year-old has been a divisive figure during his 10-year spell as owner, during which Newcastle have twice been relegated from the Premier League.

The club said they were willing to listen to offers that would be capable of "delivering sustained investment" toward achieving their ambitions in the top flight.

Financier Amanda Staveley, 44, is a potential suitor, according to BBC Radio 5 live senior football reporter Ian Dennis, after being seen watching Newcastle's 1-1 home draw against Liverpool earlier this month.

Andrew Henderson, a partner at Ashley's legal representatives Dentons, said the current owner could help with "additional funds in the short term" to complete a sale.

"That would allow seriously interested parties to put themselves forward".

Benitez has publicly complained about Newcastle's spending on several occasions since leading them to promotion from the Championship last season, with Ashley responding that he doesn't have the cash to compete with superpowers like Manchester City, Chelsea and Manchester United.

A return to the Premier League under Rafa Benitez was an upturn in the Magpies' fortunes, but Ashley recently revealed his frustration at not being able to give Newcastle the platform compete with Manchester City and the Premier League's other big spenders.
