Georgia Tech Protest Takes a Violent Turn

Georgia Tech Protest Takes a Violent Turn

What had been a peaceful vigil for Georgia Tech student Scout Shultz-who was shot and killed by police after calling 911-ended in scenes of carnage Monday night as protests turned violent on the streets of Atlanta.

Authorities advised students to avoid Hemphill Avenue and to stay indoors until told otherwise.

The evening began with a peaceful vigil to remember Scout Schultz, a 21-year-old engineering student from Lilburn.

Schultz was shot and killed after a confrontation with Georgia Tech campus police late Saturday night.

After a Monday night vigil, the university issued an alert through its emergency system telling people to seek shelter and lock doors and windows because of violent protests. When the police arrived, a core group was arrested. Schultz also had several suicide notes that were found among their possessions. During his phone call to police, he reported a "white male, with long blond hair, white T-shirt & blue jeans who is possibly intoxicated, holding a knife and possibly armed with a gun on his hip", which described his appearance at the time. "Take Immediate Action Now", the Georgia Tech Department said in a tweet at 9:28 p.m. Monday.

Wallace says the protesters who were arrested are being charged with inciting a riot and battery of an officer.

Two police officers received minor injures and one of them was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital, a Tech spokesman said.

"W$3 e ask that those who wish to protest Scout's death do so peacefully". Schultz refused to put down the knife and kept moving toward officers late Saturday, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said in a statement. The university hasn't said whether they're students, and didn't provide their ages or hometowns.

"This is how we will truly honor Scout's life and legacy".

"Scout's family respects the rights of those who wish to voice opposition to what they feel was an unnecessary use of force, but they ask that it be done respectfully and safely", the statement added.

Police later confirmed that a group of approximately 50 protestors marched to the Georgia Tech Police Department and set one vehicle on fire.

University police have since given the all clear. "Now, it's our turn to give back to them".
