Britain calls on Myanmar Govt to end violence against Rohingya Muslims

Field is the first foreign minister to visit the western Myanmar state since the crisis there escalated with nearly half a million of Rohingyas fleeing to Bangladesh, the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office said in a statement.

Ms Suu Kyi - a Nobel peace prize victor - had faced intense global criticism for her refusal to condemn the actions of the security forces.

In a speech on Tuesday, the Nobel Prize victor condemned human rights abuses but did not blame the army or address allegations of ethnic cleansing.

This was stated by British State Minister for Asia Mark Field during a meeting with Myanmar's State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi. "But the ongoing violence and humanitarian crisis in Rakhine risks derailing that progress", he added.

"There has been a lot [of] inter-communal dispute that goes back some decades".

"What we have seen in Rakhine in the past few weeks is an absolute and unacceptable tragedy", he said.

Mr Corbyn will say: "I say this today to Aung San Suu Kyi, a champion of democracy and human rights, end the violence now against the Rohingya in Myanmar and allow the United Nations and worldwide aid agencies into Rakhine state".

"Burma has taken great strides forward in recent years".

"She finds herself treading a fine line between the global criticism, which we have obviously seen in the last six months, but also public opinion in Burma which remains very strong anti-Rohingya".

"It's incredible how widespread that is".

"The Rohingya have suffered for too long".

A stateless mostly Muslim minority in Buddhist-majority Rakhine, the Rohingya have long experienced persecution.

Burmese security officials and insurgents from the Rohingya have accused each other of burning down entire villages and committing massacres in the region and the Burmese military launched the latest crackdown on 25 August following a series of attacks blamed on separatist militants. Myanmar's military has repeatedly denied targeting civilians but witnesses, refugees and journalists have contested this.
